Robotic Physical Comparison of Biologically Motivated and Counterfactual Sensory Arrangements using Biomimetic Skin

arXiv

arXiv:2610.26680v1 Announce Type: new Abstract: Human skin contains diverse mechanoreceptors, including Merkel cells and Pacinian corpuscles, each localized in specific regions. Although their spatial organization is known to be shaped by molecular signaling and neural induction during development, experimentally examining its functional significance under controlled conditions in living systems remains challenging. In particular, physically comparing alternative receptor arrangements that do not occur biologically is difficult. In this study, we developed a layered biomimetic robotic skin designed to mimic key structural features of human skin tissue by embedding receptor-analog sensors within compliant soft media. Using this platform, we implemented both biologically motivated and counterfactual sensory arrangements and quantitatively evaluated their performance across three passive tactile tasks: detection of weak contacts, a two-point discrimination-like assessment, and texture ide

RoboValue: A Fine-Grained Sim-and-Real Benchmark for Unified Evaluation of Robotic Value Models

arXiv

arXiv:2610.26663v1 Announce Type: new Abstract: Robotic value models assess task execution from visual observations and instructions, providing feedback for policy learning and execution monitoring. However, existing evaluations cover only selected aspects of execution understanding, leaving the reliability of value feedback insufficiently tested. We introduce RoboValue, a fine-grained sim-and-real benchmark for unified evaluation of robotic value models. Its framework evaluates four complementary capability dimensions through shared interfaces: task-state understanding, temporal progress monitoring, failure and recovery reasoning, and value consistency. Diagnostic trajectories and instruction variations test whether value judgments accurately reflect task requirements and changes throughout execution. RoboValue-Dataset covers 15 simulation and 20 real-world manipulation tasks, providing expert demonstrations for training and annotated trajectories for fine-grained evaluation. We evalu

CAOS-SLAM: Class-Agnostic Object-Aware Real-Time vSLAM for Dynamic Environments

arXiv

arXiv:2610.26633v1 Announce Type: new Abstract: Robust visual Simultaneous Localization and Mapping (vSLAM) in dynamic environments faces challenges due to the presence of moving objects that may introduce erroneous observations, corrupt the map reconstruction and overall degrade localization accuracy. Existing vSLAM approaches often rely on predefined semantic classes or costly pixel-wise classification, limiting their robustness or applicability in real-world scenarios. This paper presents CAOS-SLAM, a dynamic vSLAM framework that extends ORB-SLAM3 with a hybrid perception pipeline to detect, track, and filter both semantically known and previously unseen moving objects in real-time. On-demand panoptic segmentation is performed for object discovery, with candidate unknown objects instantiated through depth-based clustering of unclassified regions. Between panoptic updates, persistent object tracks are updated using lightweight detection when available or temporal mask propagation bas

A Probabilistic, Rotation-Preserving Kernel Operator Surrogate for Continuum-Robot Design Spaces

arXiv

arXiv:2610.26605v1 Announce Type: new Abstract: We develop an uncertainty-aware, operator-learning-based surrogate for tendon-driven continuum robots (TDCRs) that generalizes across robot design and actuation while predicting the complete equilibrium configuration. Our central idea is a nonstationary Gaussian-process (GP) kernel whose metric is learned by a shallow neural network from mechanics-aware design coordinates. The network learns how similarity changes across design space, while the resulting kernel defines the design-to-pose operator, its posterior uncertainty, and a criterion for sequential simulator acquisition. We represent backbone position and rotational strain with spatial kernels and reconstruct orientation directly on SO(3), preserving valid material frames and tendon geometry. We use ASkotch with Nystrom preconditioning for scalable kernel operator solves and a separate Nystrom approximation for posterior covariance. Experiments show that kernel-coverage acquisition

HAF-VLA: Hierarchical Action Flow Framework for Humanoid Vision-Language-Action Control

arXiv

arXiv:2610.26584v1 Announce Type: new Abstract: Humanoid robots hold great promise as general-purpose agents in human-centered environments, yet adapting generalist vision-language-action (VLA) policies to real-world humanoid loco-manipulation remains challenging. Unlike fixed-base or wheeled manipulators, humanoids must coordinate locomotion, posture, gaze, and dual-arm manipulation over a high-dimensional whole-body action space, where inaccurate base or waist motions can easily induce unstable and aggressive upper-body compensation. We propose HAF-VLA, a hierarchical action-flow framework for humanoid VLA control. Built upon a pretrained flow-matching VLA, HAF-VLA inherits the vision-language prefix encoder and action expert weights, and adapts them to humanoid whole-body loco-manipulation with learnable stage embeddings and cross-stage KV-cache conditioning. Instead of generating the full action chunk in a single pass, HAF-VLA progressively denoises a shared whole-body action space

Learning Wheel Motion Uncertainty for Degeneracy-Aware LiDAR-Inertial Odometry on Quadrupedal Wheel-Legged Robots

arXiv

arXiv:2610.26550v1 Announce Type: new Abstract: Wheel kinematics can support odometry for quadrupedal wheel-legged robots when LiDAR geometry provides weak motion constraints. However, slip and contact loss make rolling predictions unreliable, and contact state alone cannot determine their reliability across motion directions. We propose a tightly coupled LiDAR-inertial-kinematic odometry framework that retains analytical rolling predictions and learns per-wheel, direction-dependent process covariances from proprioceptive history. The estimator maintains moving wheel-center states, allowing the learned uncertainty to regulate the influence of rolling predictions through forward-kinematic corrections. Degeneracy-aware projection (DAP) complements this mechanism by suppressing LiDAR constraints along geometrically weak directions. The learned covariance network (CovNet) is trained through a differentiable filter using simulated velocity supervision and deployed on the real robot without

Learn the Task, Not the Schedule: Reducing Spurious Cross-Arm Coupling in Bimanual Imitation Learning

arXiv

arXiv:2610.26507v1 Announce Type: new Abstract: A bimanual demonstration specifies both what the robot should do and one particular schedule for when each arm should act. Standard imitation learning does not distinguish task-required cross-arm constraints from incidental scheduling choices, and may therefore exploit opposite-arm progress as a shortcut cue, creating spurious cross-arm coupling even where relative timing is irrelevant for the current task phase. We introduce Constraint-preserving Temporal Recombination (CTR), a training-time data intervention that preserves recorded arm-local sensorimotor content while retiming the corresponding segments to realize admissible schedules that preserve task-required cross-arm constraints. We use CTR to train Diffusion Policy, Action Chunking with Transformers, and $\pi_{0.5}$, and evaluate them on four simulated and four real-robot tasks. Across six real-robot bimanual progress-state initializations, CTR raises worst-state success from 56%

SPAR: Structural Pruning and Action Recovery for Vision-Language-Action Models

arXiv

arXiv:2610.26487v1 Announce Type: new Abstract: The limited onboard computing resources of robots make the inference demands of vision-language-action (VLA) models costly to accommodate. Reducing these demands through aggressive compression, however, can degrade manipulation performance beyond what supervised fine-tuning alone recovers. We present SPAR (Structural Pruning and Action Recovery), which simultaneously prunes the hidden and feed-forward intermediate dimensions of the large language model (LLM) backbone through pruning-aware tuning, then applies reinforcement learning (RL) to recover policy performance. Applied to $\pi_{0.5}$, SPAR reduces the language backbone from 2.34B to 0.09B parameters and the full model from 3.37B to 1.12B, removing approximately 96% and 67% of their parameters, respectively. At this compression level, RL raises average success across the four LIBERO suites from 84.55% to 93.45%, an 8.90-percentage-point gain. The compressed policy achieves a $1.98\ti

ALIGN: Aligning Condition Estimation and Expression in Advantage-Conditioned Behavior Cloning

arXiv

arXiv:2610.26455v1 Announce Type: new Abstract: Human-collected robot manipulation data often mix successful behavior with retries, pauses, recoveries, and failures. Advantage-Conditioned Behavior Cloning (AC-BC) can exploit such mixed-quality data, but only if the conditioning signal is both accurately constructed from offline trajectories and effectively incorporated into the policy's action-vector-field prediction. Existing pipelines can weaken this signal by thresholding estimator-derived advantage scores into noisy conditions, and by routing conditions through prompts that weakly affect the action vector field. We introduce ALIGN, a condition-aligned AC-BC framework for vision-language-action policies. ALIGN directly predicts categorical pairwise conditions in the policy-facing label space and injects them into a DiT action expert through AdaRMS modulation fused with flow time. We evaluate ALIGN on deliberately mixed real-robot datasets for ARX X5 bowl stacking and Franka key hang

A Human-in-the-Loop Comparison of Proportional Control and Adaptive Gravity Compensation in Elbow EMG-Driven Exoskeletons

arXiv

arXiv:2610.26445v1 Announce Type: new Abstract: Electromyography (EMG)-driven control enables wearable robots to assist users based on their neuromuscular activity. Upper-limb exoskeletons typically rely on proportional myoelectric control (PMC), which amplifies user effort but may compromise stability at high assistance levels. EMG-driven adaptive gravity compensation (AGC) offers a promising alternative, counterbalancing gravitational torques while continuously adapting to neuromuscular activity. However, these approaches have not been systematically compared in a human-in-the-loop setting. This study evaluates five control algorithms: two PMC strategies at different assistance levels, a purely integral AGC (AGC-PI), a kinematics- and acceleration-aware model-based (MB) AGC (AGC-AW), and a novel MB AGC approach based on Recursive Least Squares (AGC-RLS) for online payload estimation. Fourteen healthy participants performed target-reaching tasks using an active elbow exoskeleton under

RoboMMT: Learning Stable Tracking of Modulated Expressive and Interactive Robot Motion

arXiv

arXiv:2610.26414v1 Announce Type: new Abstract: Expressive robot motion can improve naturalness, effectiveness, and perceived likability in human-robot interaction. When deployed on dynamically unstable platforms, however, reactive execution of expressive body motion may bring the robot to its stability limits, especially when expressivity is decoupled from physical control. In this paper, we present RoboMMT (Robot Modulated Motion Tracking), a modular control architecture that couples parameterized expressive motion synthesis, physics-based character control, and reactive adaptation to spatial interaction goals. Our approach trains a reference-conditioned tracking policy across a broad domain of expressivity, enabling it to faithfully realize the commanded motions while maintaining dynamic stability. Goal reactivity is achieved by training lightweight, task-specific interaction policies that modulate the reference generator's spatial goal-attraction point, with the stabilizing trackin

ForagerSim: Evaluating Embodied Map-Based Reasoning in Large-Scale Dynamic Worlds

arXiv

arXiv:2610.26395v1 Announce Type: new Abstract: Animals build cognitive maps of vast environments, use them to perform map-based navigation, and might even be reusing the same circuitry used in spatial reasoning for creating and using maps of arbitrary task-spaces. In contrast, current embodied AI systems either rely on hand-engineered mapping pipelines, which break in the presence of unmodeled dynamics and are restricted to metric space, or on learned policies that rarely form map-like representations at all. Developing architectures that could learn to build and use map-like representations as flexibly as animals is, however, difficult because few embodied AI benchmarks actually require map-based reasoning. To address this, we present ForagerSim --- an interdisciplinary research platform and simulation environment focused on embodied tasks that require map-based reasoning, with scenarios ranging from mobile-robot search and rescue to animal foraging in both complex mazes and vast, po

Robotic Photography System based on Vision-Language-Action Model

arXiv

arXiv:2610.26287v1 Announce Type: new Abstract: Modern robotic photography requires understanding photographic intent, planning camera motions, and producing aesthetically pleasing images in complex environments. We present RoboPhoto-VLA, a unified Vision-Language-Action framework that jointly models perception, reasoning, and camera control for autonomous robotic photography. RoboPhoto-VLA incorporates PhotoCoT for structured action planning and Aesthetic Direct Preference Optimization (ADPO) to align camera behaviors with human aesthetic preferences. To facilitate training and evaluation, we construct OpenPhotography, a robotic photography dataset with language-guided demonstrations. Extensive real-world experiments demonstrate that RoboPhoto-VLA produces photographs better aligned with human aesthetic preferences while generalizing effectively to unseen subjects, viewpoints, poses, and complex photographic instructions.

K-AoI: A Spatio-Temporal Synchronization Metric for Digital Twin-based Teleoperation in Dynamic Network Environments

arXiv

arXiv:2610.26201v1 Announce Type: new Abstract: Synchronization between a digital twin (DT) and its physical robot is critical for effective teleoperation, as mismatches directly degrade operator awareness and task performance. Existing synchronization metrics are predominantly time-based and rarely capture the spatial consequences of delayed information during motion. In this paper, we introduce Kinematic Age of Information (K-AoI), a spatio-temporal metric that weights AoI by instantaneous Cartesian velocity, translating temporal staleness into physically meaningful spatial divergence. We implement and evaluate K-AoI on a DT teleoperation testbed comprising a six-degrees-of-freedom (6-DOF) manipulator, a Unity-based twin, and controlled network impairments using tc netem across seven network conditions. Per-sample analysis shows that K-AoI exhibits rank-correlations with AoI at $\rho \leq 0.65$ across all networks, dropping to $\rho = 0.22$ under satellite connections. This shows tha

Data-Efficient Learning from Demonstration for Humanoid Robots via Feature-Level Perception and Prompt-Based Object Detection

arXiv

arXiv:2610.26170v1 Announce Type: new Abstract: Learning from Demonstration (LfD) allows robots to learn new skills from human examples; however, many vision-based methods require large datasets and resource-intensive end-to-end training. This paper introduces a data-efficient LfD framework for humanoid robots that learns manipulation skills from compact, task-specific features instead of raw images. The proposed approach integrates layered visual preprocessing, Kinect-based human joint estimation, prompt-based object detection, and depth information to extract human motion features and three-dimensional object locations from demonstration videos. These features are used to train a temporal deep learning model that predicts robot joint-angle trajectories for execution. The framework is implemented on a NAO humanoid robot, evaluated quantitatively in simulation, and demonstrated on physical hardware. In simulation, the robot achieves a 78% success rate on a pick-and-place task using onl
