End-to-End Safe Social Navigation via Multi-Task Reinforcement Learning and Probabilistic Perception

arXiv

arXiv:2610.05733v1 Announce Type: new Abstract: Autonomous social navigation requires balancing efficiency, physical safety, and social compliance. Reinforcement Learning (RL) methods provide a viable and effective solution but often rely on unrealistic assumptions, such as the knowledge of humans' position and velocity. In this paper, we introduce JESSI (JAX-based E2E Safe Social Interpretable navigation), a lightweight end-to-end RL framework that maps raw LiDAR scans directly to kinematically feasible control commands. JESSI enhances safety via Dirichlet-parameterized continuous action spaces and deterministic bounding, while an integrated attention-based perception module extracts probabilistic human states for interpretable, socially aware decision-making. Through extensive simulations and real-world deployment on a differential-drive robot, we demonstrate that jointly optimizing the RL policy with a supervised perception signal in a multi-task paradigm enhances social behavior. When to Switch: Reliable Action-Chunk Extension for Vision-Language-Action Models

arXiv

arXiv:2610.05719v1 Announce Type: new Abstract: Vision-Language-Action (VLA) models serve as unified policies for robotic manipulation, yet their expensive inference forces robots to pause between policy calls, resulting in stop-and-go execution that interrupts smooth motion and prolongs task completion. Extending the action chunk reduces policy calls and hence these pauses, but predicting farther into the future makes long-chunk execution unreliable. To understand where this unreliability arises, we analyze action errors within long chunks and find that they concentrate around transitions between manipulation subskills, growing sharply with chunk length. This suggests the importance of transition timing, i.e., when to switch subskills within a chunk. Motivated by this observation, we introduce RACE (Reliable Action-Chunk Extension), a framework that predicts the transition timing from an auxiliary one-step denoising pass and conditions action generation on it. Virtual model control for compliant reaching under uncertainties

arXiv

arXiv:2610.05695v1 Announce Type: new Abstract: Virtual Model Control (VMC) is an approach to design a controller for force-controlled robots in complex uncertain environments. While this method was primarily investigated for legged robot locomotion in the past, it can be more generally applicable to other types of robotic systems. This paper investigates the VMC framework for reaching tasks in a force-controlled robotic arm. We propose six different approaches to designing virtual models in order to achieve reaching tasks in environments with obstacles and uncertainties. A force-controlled 8 degree-of-freedom humanoid robot was used to validate the proposed approach in the real world. We conducted three experiments to test the performance of VMC controllers in terms of predictability, sensitivity to external force, and adaptability against known and unknown obstacles. Experimental analyses show that, even though the proposed approach needs to sacrifice accuracy and trajectory optimali

Benchmarking Generative Trajectory Models for Active-Inference Control

arXiv

arXiv:2610.05692v1 Announce Type: new Abstract: Learning from trajectory demonstrations offers a route to active-inference control of complex systems whose dynamics are difficult to model explicitly. We introduce generative active-inference control (GenAIF), in which one generative trajectory model learns from demonstrations and measured action interventions to supply a goal-conditioned policy distribution and a state-to-observation likelihood mapping. From this control design, we derive three model requirements: (i) useful action proposals, (ii) accurate prediction under imposed actions, and (iii) probabilistic observation evidence for belief updating and expected information gain. We benchmark diffusion, autoregressive Transformers, conditional variational autoencoders (CVAEs), and flow matching in a MuJoCo manipulation task with multiple physical conditions. Diffusion delivers the strongest control across the tested dynamics, while CVAE combines comparable short-horizon prediction w

Dataset-Free Compliant Humanoid Loco-Manipulation with Dynamic Online Posture

arXiv

arXiv:2610.05678v1 Announce Type: new Abstract: Most humanoid loco-manipulation controllers require human motion data to learn whole-body coordination and posture, leaving policies reliant on external sources to provide this data. We present OCLO (Online-posture Compliant LOco-manipulation), a humanoid loco-manipulation system trained without human motion data and commanded only through two end-effector targets. Because these targets do not uniquely determine whole-body posture, OCLO generates pelvis height and torso orientation online using an analytic reachability prior, further refined through policy-in-the-loop sampling with a task-agnostic cost. OCLO also learns whole-body compliance by displacing end-effector references according to measured forces through a spring-damper model, encouraging the legs, waist, and pelvis to yield to external loads. In simulation, using the reachability prior leads to a 77.8% success rate in acquiring the commanded reference, a vast improvement over

Learning Coordinated Visuomotor Box-Pushing from Solo Demonstrations

arXiv

arXiv:2610.05677v1 Announce Type: new Abstract: Multi-robot imitation learning, particularly in settings where visuomotor policies are deployed in a communication-free, onboard decentralised style, represents an attractive paradigm. However, its realisation remains insufficiently understood, largely due to the difficulty of collecting collective demonstrations, since a single operator cannot control many robots simultaneously. Meanwhile, unlike coupled collaborative manipulation, many coordinated tasks achieve system-wide efficiency primarily through minimising inter-robot interference. This structure motivates us to study whether data collected by a teleoperated single-robot can be leveraged for large-scale coordinated box-pushing as a testbed. We systematically investigate dataset creation strategies and lightweight policy architectures. In particular, experiments with up to 40 robots highlight the difficulty of acquiring effective coordination solely through passive observation of o

Bayesian Data Augmentation for DNN Retraining with Binomial Outcomes in Vision-Based UAV Landing

arXiv

arXiv:2610.05674v1 Announce Type: new Abstract: In GPS-denied or cluttered urban environments, vision-based landing is essential for reliable UAV missions. Real-world landing sites are often unstructured and highly variable, requiring strong generalization by the perception system. Deep Neural Networks (DNNs) trained with synthetic data augmentation offer a scalable solution for learning landing-site features across diverse vehicle and environmental states. However, computationally expensive DNN retraining, along with challenging performance validation via test flights, limits exhaustive model fine-tuning and necessitates an optimized retraining pipeline. In this work, we deploy a Bayesian data augmentation framework integrated with a photorealistic simulator featuring high-fidelity vehicle dynamics to iteratively retrain the helipad detector DNN, maximizing landing performance as the objective function. We validate our framework with experiments in a photorealistic simulator under dif

FOCUS: Fine-Grained Open-Vocabulary Change Detection for Uncertainty-Aware Semi-Static Scenes

arXiv

arXiv:2610.05639v1 Announce Type: new Abstract: Autonomous robots operating over long periods must keep their environmental memory up to date as the world changes between visits. In semi-static environments, an object may be replaced in place by a different but geometrically and semantically similar instance, making the identity change difficult to detect from geometry or coarse semantics alone. We present FOCUS, an uncertainty-aware framework for object-level change detection and map maintenance. We formulate semi-static memory maintenance as probabilistic inference that fuses geometric likelihood with appearance likelihood rendered from a 3D Gaussian map. A recursive three-state estimator maintains whether each mapped object is PERSISTED, REPLACED, or REMOVED. To account for imperfect 3DGS rendering, we model the rendered appearance evidence probabilistically rather than using it as a direct change score, with the model parameters automatically calibrated from a change-free replay of

Emergency Obstacle Avoidance Maneuvers in Differential-Drive Mobile Robots

arXiv

arXiv:2610.05607v1 Announce Type: new Abstract: Emergency obstacle avoidance requires a mobile robot to brake or change its heading within the available distance. This paper investigates the dependence of maneuver performance and odometric error on approach speed for a differential-drive robot. A footprint-clearance analysis and a normalized wheel-motion index provide a kinematic description of five braking and turning maneuvers. The principal experiment comprises 540 block-randomized trials on tile, of which 539 are retained, at commanded approach speeds of 45, 55, and 65 cm/s. An overhead camera provides an independent pose reference. When encoder, gyro, and camera heading changes are evaluated over complete motion records, the mean encoder discrepancy increases by 4.7-5.1 degrees for the two reverse-spin maneuvers between the lowest and highest speeds; the arc and brake-assisted pivot change by less than 0.4 degrees. Larger encoder discrepancy is associated with lower avoidance succ

Building A Multi-Sensor Platform For Autonomous Driving Research: Challenges and Lessons Learned

arXiv

arXiv:2610.05604v1 Announce Type: new Abstract: This paper reports on the challenges encountered and lessons learned during the development and deployment of a flexible multi-sensor platform for autonomous driving research. It aims to serve as a reference for researchers developing new multi-sensor systems. As the need for reliable, diverse datasets increases, novel environments and sensing configurations are essential to tackle real-world operational challenges. Consequently, many research groups create custom multi-sensory data collection platforms, where fundamental issues, such as mechanical design, sensor calibration, power management, and time synchronization, arise regardless of sensor types. We reflect on these challenges and share key insights to guide future platform designs, enhancing reproducibility and robustness in autonomous vehicle testing. We also summarize the mitigation strategies we adopted, for instance, system-wide time synchronization using GNSS timing and NTP pr

TacGELLO: Tactile Contact Feedback for a 3D-Printed Teleoperation Leader

arXiv

arXiv:2610.05583v1 Announce Type: new Abstract: Passive leader arms transmit an operator's motion without returning remote contact or load cues. TacGELLO uses the existing servos of a 3D-printed leader for tactile contact feedback at the gripper trigger and current-based load cues at the arm joints. AnySkin contact detection activates a trigger position hold, while changes in follower joint current adjust leader-servo output limits to command resistance during lifting. Across six UR3 sessions with one operator, sent-command tracking error was 0.15--0.36$^\circ$ RMSE, with estimated trajectory lag of 82--98\,ms. Tactile onset was logged in 60 of 62 segmented TacGELLO grasp intervals. Median commanded closure after tactile or width-based contact references was 0.7--2.1\,mm with TacGELLO and 13.0--13.9\,mm with the original interface.

GR-LIO: A Local Ground-Aware LiDAR-Inertial Odometry System Using Body-to-Ground Height

arXiv

arXiv:2610.05546v1 Announce Type: new Abstract: LiDAR-inertial odometry (LIO) is widely used for state estimation in ground-based autonomous mobile robots. However, the geometric constraints provided by the local ground surface remain largely underexploited in existing LIO systems. This paper proposes a filter-based local ground-aware LIO framework that explicitly incorporates local ground plane geometry into the state estimation process to improve both localization accuracy and computational efficiency. Specifically, a local ground plane is parameterized by the robot orientation and the body-to-ground (B-G) height and continuously propagated within the state estimation process. Based on the proposed B-G geometry model, a propagated local ground plane enables efficient and reliable ground segmentation. The segmented ground points are then incorporated into the filter update through point-to-plane geometric constraints, improving both state estimation accuracy and efficiency. Furthermor

Neural Barriers: An Online Certifiable Learning-enhanced Adaptive High Order Safety Critical Control

arXiv

arXiv:2610.05542v1 Announce Type: new Abstract: Control barrier functions are an effective model-based tool to formally certify the safety of a system. However, transferring their theoretical guarantees to real-world robotics systems requires high model fidelity. For example, payloads or wind disturbances can cause significant model perturbations to an aerial vehicle, leading to safety compromises. In this work, we propose a certifiable online learning-enhanced robust adaptive control barrier function, which adapts to disturbances using a Neural ODE and quantifies its adaptation uncertainty with conformal prediction. Our approach guarantees safety at all time under unknown time-varying model disturbances. It adopts a conservative strategy when the adaptation uncertainty is high; and efficiently adapts to reduce controller conservativeness as it receives more data. Our approach provides a provable safety guarantee with a probability bound under suitable Lipschitz smoothness assumptions

Robust 2D Traversability Mapping for Construction AMRs via Failure-Mode-Aware Fusion of LiDAR Geometry and Monocular Semantics

arXiv

arXiv:2610.05505v1 Announce Type: new Abstract: Autonomous Mobile Robots (AMRs) on active construction sites face severe navigational challenges: geometry-based traversability mapping (e.g., LiDAR) misses visually hazardous but geometrically flat surfaces like wet mud and ponding concrete, while abrupt geometry on drivable speed-breakers and inclines produces phantom obstacles. We propose a real-time, failure-mode-aware multimodal traversability pipeline on an NVIDIA Jetson AGX Orin, where LiDAR is the primary geometric safety estimate and monocular semantics act as a selective, class- and confidence-gated corrective signal. The representation retains distinct traversable classes, namely flat road, terrain, and rocky terrain, while flagging construction hazards. We also release a multimodal construction-site dataset from a custom AMR: four closed-loop ROS 2 sequences from two active sites (RGB, depth, LiDAR, IMU, GPS-RTK, odometry) plus 506 annotated frames across 28 semantic classes.

Robust Surgical Robotic Instrument Tracking via Sequential Multi-Cue Fusion and Sim-to-Real Self-Training

arXiv

arXiv:2610.05491v1 Announce Type: new Abstract: Efficient and robust tracking of surgical robotic instruments is important for robot-assisted minimally invasive surgery, yet remains challenging due to the complexity of surgical scenes and the unconventional geometry of surgical instruments. Keypoint-based approaches are efficient, but their performance depends on reliable feature detection. Improving these detectors with real-world supervision is difficult because accurate real-world annotations are costly to obtain at scale. To address this limitation, we introduce a tracker-guided self-training framework that adapts a model pretrained on synthetic images to unlabeled real-world videos. Given measured robot joint states, an uncertainty-aware EKF recursively corrects the instrument pose and the observable joint angles by comparing projected model features with detected keypoints, shaft boundaries, and mask-derived cues. An RTS smoother subsequently refines the resulting trajectory, whi
