Learning from Relative Action Credit for Escaping Local Minima

arXiv

arXiv:2610.38034v1 Announce Type: cross Abstract: Reinforcement learning holds the promise of robots that learn manipulation skills from interaction alone, without pretrained priors or demonstration data. In practice, on-policy methods such as PPO routinely stall on long-horizon, contact-rich tasks: dense reward shaping carries the policy through stages, yet stitching them together and discovering sparsely rewarded events rarely succeeds. We trace this failure to the missing action discrimination in state-value credit assignment: a state-value critic judges progress only by episode outcomes, so when the policy converges to a partial solution all outcomes coincide, and improvement stops because no action can prove better than another. We therefore extend PPO with an action conditioned value critic which, can compare the executed action with alternatives sampled at the same state and aid the learning signal. Combined with Generalized Advantage Estimation and a bound on exploration noise,

GOFish: Full Field-of-View Gaussian Splatting and Mesh Extraction

arXiv

arXiv:2610.37818v1 Announce Type: cross Abstract: Robots, autonomous vehicles, and consumer 360{\deg} cameras use fisheye lenses for wide fields of view (FoVs). Simulation-ready digital twins require photorealistic rendering across the full FoV and an aligned collision mesh. However, prior fisheye Gaussian Splatting methods only rasterize up to 180{\deg} and do not produce meshes, while Gaussian surface reconstruction methods assume pinhole training images. We present GOFish, the first 3D Gaussian Splatting surface reconstruction method to train directly on fisheye images, rasterize FoVs beyond 180{\deg}, and extract an aligned mesh from the same scene. Calibrated densification recovers the surface across the entire FoV, while Calibrated Mip Filtering and Wide-Angle Appearance Modeling keep pixel blur and lens falloff out of the scene and mesh. Across the 200{\deg} FIORD and 205{\deg} FullCircle benchmarks, GOFish improves PSNR over the best prior method by 2.28 and 1.97 dB, respective

SwapBot: Tool-Centric Robot Manipulation via Interchangeable End-Effectors and Tactile Sensing

arXiv

arXiv:2610.40646v1 Announce Type: new Abstract: Robot manipulation in everyday environments inherently involves substantial tool usage. Seemingly simple household tasks, such as cooking pan-fried tofu, require forceful cutting, delicate brushing, and precise placement using different tools under contact-rich interaction. Thus, the ability to autonomously swap and use task-appropriate tools is important for tool-centric manipulation. We introduce SwapBot, a modular, tool-centric end effector system featuring low-cost adapters that quickly convert common household tools into robot end effectors. Rather than pursuing a single universal gripper, SwapBot adopts a unified design principle that combines a fixed robot-side coupling interface with low-cost, tool-side adapters, enabling compatibility with diverse tools, including articulated ones, and multiple robot platforms. Each adapter integrates compact tactile sensors, supports fast autonomous swapping, and interfaces with an intuitive tel

SymAnt: Grounding Long-Horizon Action Anticipation with Adaptable Symbolic Priors

arXiv

arXiv:2610.40632v1 Announce Type: new Abstract: As robots and intelligent systems increasingly interact with humans, they must anticipate long sequences of future actions from only brief observations. While purely neural models typically require extensive observations to predict future actions and remain difficult to interpret and adjust, symbolic priors offer a structured alternative. To this end, we introduce SymAnt, a novel neuro-symbolic approach that unifies the expressiveness of neural networks with the structured reasoning of scene and knowledge graphs. Given a short video, SymAnt performs a joint-search over both graphs to construct a symbolic context, enabling unified reasoning over spatial relationships, object attributes, affordances, and associated actions. This symbolic context serves as a prior for an iterative refinement process that progressively generates and improves the sequence of future actions. By grounding predictions in symbolic context, SymAnt anticipates long-

A Conveyor Belt Mechanism for Repositionable Magnetic Coupling Between Continuum Robots

arXiv

arXiv:2610.40600v1 Announce Type: new Abstract: This work proposes a novel conveyor belt mechanism enabling continuous, active repositioning of functional elements along the body of a tendon-driven continuum robot. Up to three conveyor belt mechanisms are integrated within a 9 mm diameter continuum robot. We demonstrate equivalent or reduced conveyor belt actuation forces compared to robot tendon actuation forces. As a case study, we mount permanent magnets along two conveyor belts, and demonstrate actively reconfigurable inter-robot coupling. Coupling point location and quantity can be adjusted during robot operation to actively tune the effective stiffness of the coupled multi-robot system. We show that effective stiffness follows a predictable inverse-cubic relationship with coupling location, and increases with the number of coupling points. These findings demonstrate that the conveyor belt mechanism enables active functional element repositioning for changing tasks requirements, w

Gym-Anything for Robotics: Scaling physical simulations with digital agents

arXiv

arXiv:2610.40565v1 Announce Type: new Abstract: Realistic, fast robotics simulations could enable large-scale training of embodied AI models that transfer to the real world. However, despite decades of progress, available simulations cover only a narrow range of real-world tasks and physical phenomena. The core bottleneck is that creating better simulations requires significant expert effort and therefore does not scale. To address this, we introduce Gym-Anything for Robotics, a framework in which coding agents create realistic robotics simulations. Our core insight is that simulation creation is a coding agent task, so improvements in coding agents translate directly into richer and more faithful simulations. We select simulations based on U.S. GDP data to cover economically valuable physical work, define what makes a good simulation and a good task, and develop an adversarial creation-audit loop that checks each simulation and task against these definitions. Using this pipeline, we b

A Tutorial on Shape Servoing of Deformable Objects-Part I: Fundamentals

arXiv

arXiv:2610.40559v1 Announce Type: new Abstract: In robotics, shape control (or shape servoing) refers to the automatic manipulation of a deformable object to achieve a desired shape. It involves a feedback loop that exploits the relation between robot motion and changes in the measured shape. This relation, known as the interaction Jacobian or, in this context, the deformation Jacobian, depends on the object's mechanical properties, geometry, and boundary conditions (e.g., where the object is grasped). Because these factors are often difficult to model accurately, the deformation Jacobian can be estimated locally from observed shape changes produced by commanded robot motions, without requiring a fine-tuned mechanical model. This article is the first of a two-part tutorial on data-driven Jacobian-based shape control of deformable objects. It introduces the central elements of the approach: the formulation of the shape-control problem, shape representation, estimation and online update

PhysVLMM: Interaction-Conditioned Physical Belief Maps for Articulated Objects in Robot Scene Maps

arXiv

arXiv:2610.40539v1 Announce Type: new Abstract: Mobile robots must open doors and drawers, yet their scene maps record what each object is and whether it has moved, not how it will respond to a pull. This paper proposes PhysVLMM, a method that maintains a physical belief for every articulated part of a Vision-Language-Motion Map and answers a planner's queries about it, with two algorithms: a map update and a query. Watching a part move provably cannot identify its dynamics, and a measured pull identifies only the pulled part, up to one direction. PhysVLMM therefore (i) keeps that direction as a posterior instead of a point estimate, (ii) passes the evidence of each pull in closed form to the untouched look-alike parts of the map, and (iii) answers whether an action will succeed at a stated risk, or abstains. On real doors and drawers in 18 homes, it identifies the joint type in 86% of held-out pulls (48% for a learned single-view method) and predicts the response to a pull with 41% lo

DAWN: Diffusion-based Alignment and unfastening Workflow Network

arXiv

arXiv:2610.40537v1 Announce Type: new Abstract: We present DAWN (Diffusion-based Alignment and unfastening Workflow Network), a hierarchical robotic framework designed to perform real-world, unfastening tasks through multi-modal sensory integration. Autonomous robotic unfastening is crucial for improving recycling processes, enhancing safety, and reducing operational costs; yet, it remains predominantly manual due to inherent challenges in precise screwdriver engagement with fasteners, detailed force execution, and robustness to environmental variability. To address the complexity of learning long-horizon, contact-rich manipulation tasks, we subdivide the unfastening task procedure into two sequential stages: (1) alignment & insertion, and (2) unfastening. DAWN consists of three key components: AlignNet, a diffusion-based policy ensuring precise screwdriver tip engagement; LatchNet, a multi-modal classifier reliably detecting successful stage transitions; and UnfastNet, which achieves

BURGER: Benchmarking and Understanding Robotic Generalization via Embodied Drawing

arXiv

arXiv:2610.40532v1 Announce Type: new Abstract: How effectively can vision-language-action (VLA) models learn diverse language-conditioned behaviors as training data scales? Investigating this question requires large and varied robot datasets, whose collection on physical robots remains costly. We introduce BURGER, a language-conditioned robotic drawing benchmark with a scalable, prompt-driven pipeline for generating continuous drawing trajectories, both in simulation and the real world. In BURGER, an agent starts from the same blank canvas and controls a robot arm to draw the object or spatial composition specified by language, while each instruction allows an open-ended variety of valid drawings and stroke orders. Using 28,200 simulated demonstrations spanning 282 drawing tasks, we evaluate five representative VLA models across data scales, language grounding, and multimodal behavior. BURGER supports fine-grained analysis of language grounding, spatial composition, and action generat

A Two-Wheeled Quadrotor with All-Clockwise Tilted Rotors for Level-Attitude Surface Locomotnion

arXiv

arXiv:2610.40502v1 Announce Type: new Abstract: Conventional wheel-equipped quadrotor UAVs must tilt their bodies to generate lateral forces, limiting their ability to maintain a desired attitude during lateral motion. This paper proposes a wheeled quadrotor with all-clockwise tilted rotors that uses surface contact as a constraint to generate propulsion along the contact surface without tilting the vehicle. We analyze feasible forces and system controllability under surface contact and optimize the vehicle design considering different rotor-spin configurations. The optimization results show that a configuration in which all four rotors spin clockwise can generate a larger tangential force than the conventional alternating-spin configuration. This approach enables both aerial and contact-based locomotion without additional rotor-tilting actuators or mechanisms. Simulation results demonstrate both hovering in free space and horizontal locomotion on a floor while maintaining a level atti

Improving Fine-Grained Manipulation through Demonstration Expansion and Execution Design

arXiv

arXiv:2610.40430v1 Announce Type: new Abstract: Fine-grained manipulation requires a robot policy to follow instructions, remain robust to visual variations, and translate predicted actions into precise robot control. We present Demonstration Expansion and Execution Design (DEED), a framework for adapting a pretrained vision-language-action policy to the five MetaFine tasks through structured demonstration expansion and execution design. DEED generates demonstrations for different instructions from the same initial scene and renders each physical trajectory under different camera positions and lighting conditions while preserving its original states and action targets. A hierarchical sampling strategy balances instructions, trajectories, and visual conditions during supervised adaptation. At deployment, DEED converts predicted action chunks into robot commands using inverse kinematics, gripper mappings selected for each task, and closed-loop replanning. DEED achieves an official Overal

Optimal Path Planning with Localization constraints

arXiv

arXiv:2610.40429v1 Announce Type: new Abstract: This paper studies UAV path planning in areas where GPS signals are not present. Because these drones can easily get lost when they don't have GPS, they must rely on dead reckoning and occasionally pass near cellular towers, which act as landmarks to reset and fix their position. The goal is to find the shortest path from a start to a goal location while keeping the estimation uncertainty within a given bound. To solve this problem, we propose a localization-constrained A* planner that treats uncertainty as a hard constraint during search. The robot state and covariance are propagated using an Extended Kalman Filter (EKF), and only paths that satisfy the covariance limit are considered. We also show that the proposed method does not affect heuristic used in A* and remains admissible and consistent, ensuring optimality among all feasible paths. Extensive Monte Carlo simulations and PyBullet quadrotor test show that the proposed method find

Continuous-Action World Models: Learning Cross-Embodiment Spatiotemporal Dynamics Priors

arXiv

arXiv:2610.40401v1 Announce Type: new Abstract: We introduce Continuous-Action World Models (CoAWM), a framework for learning cross-embodiment spatiotemporal dynamics priors that support robot action generation across embodiments and execution frequencies. At its core is a shared latent function space that captures the spatial and temporal structure of robot actions. We learn this space through two stages. First, function pretraining brings trajectories from different embodiments and sampling frequencies into a common representation, learning shared dynamics priors through action reconstruction and consistency across temporal sampling views. By accommodating heterogeneous robot trajectories, this stage broadens the range of data sources available for pretraining and facilitates scaling to larger and more diverse datasets. Second, we connect the pretrained function space to a world-model backbone, enabling observations, language instructions, and the current robot state to condition the

Securing the Robotics Supply Chain

arXiv

arXiv:2610.40385v1 Announce Type: new Abstract: This paper sets out what a sustained federal research and investment agenda would need to include to close that gap--not within a single budget cycle, but over the decade such an undertaking will realistically require. It identifies where the gap is most pronounced today: in the methods needed to verify and certify components of uncertain origin, in the foundational hardware research that has long been underfunded relative to software, in the physical infrastructure researchers need to test systems at scale, and in the workforce required to build and sustain all of it. Robotics should not be treated merely as a downstream beneficiary of a broader artificial intelligence investment strategy. It constitutes its own supply chain, with its own points of failure, and merits its own sustained federal commitment.
