Interpretable Collision Avoidance and Feasibility Guarantees through an Uncertainty Aware Pipeline

arXiv

arXiv:2610.33186v1 Announce Type: new Abstract: Autonomous vehicles (AVs) operating in dynamic, challenging conditions such as intersections and roundabouts must guarantee collision avoidance under uncertainty while maintaining real-time feasibility. Most existing planners struggle to simultaneously guarantee both requirements. Chance-constrained formulations embed safety constraints directly in the optimization but become infeasible as uncertainty compounds; deterministic planners provide feasible solutions but fail to address the uncertainty that causes collisions; end-to-end learned policies provide neither guarantee in an interpretable form. We present a modular perception-prediction-planning pipeline that closes this gap by propagating uncertainty as structured, interpretable quantities across module boundaries. Rather than embedding probabilistic risk directly in the optimization, our pipeline resolves collision probabilities upstream and constructs convex safe sets within which

Bracketing Shows the Way: Adaptive Multi-Exposure Policy as Input for Robust Visual SLAM

arXiv

arXiv:2610.33174v1 Announce Type: new Abstract: Rapid illumination transitions can disturb Visual SLAM (VSLAM) by saturating images before the Automatic Exposure (AE) policy adapts, removing the visual correspondences needed to maintain tracking. Our proposed methods mitigate this disturbance at two levels: B-Adapt acquires adaptive exposure brackets to cover the scene dynamic range while promoting photometric overlap, and BVSLAM directly uses the multi-exposure sequence as constraints in a factor graph state estimator without relying on High Dynamic Range (HDR) merging. We evaluate both methods against state-of-the-art approaches in nominal environments and during a repeated tunnel-exit transition at an emulated vehicle speed of 32 m s-1. In the tunnel, combining our B-Adapt with BVSLAM reduces the state estimation error by 78 % compared with AE images. These results suggest that bracketing efficiently improves visual pose estimation robustness to rapid illumination disturbances while

RAIWAY: A Large-Wheeled Bipedal Robot with Contact-Informed Blind Locomotion

arXiv

arXiv:2610.33172v1 Announce Type: new Abstract: We present RAIWAY, an in-house wheeled bipedal robot with 20-inch wheels, together with a contact-informed control approach for rolling locomotion across irregular and discontinuous terrain. Such locomotion is fundamentally contact-dominated, governed by local wheel--terrain interaction that is impractical to instrument directly and depends on more than terrain geometry alone. The proposed framework exploits the contact information available in simulation, distilling multi-contact events into a latent representation. At deployment, the controller infers this representation online from proprioception, requiring no contact sensing. In real-world experiments, the proposed system traverses diverse environments including steep slopes, gravel beds, studded surfaces, and rocky terrain, and demonstrates continuous ascent on the tested outdoor staircases with riser heights up to 15~cm. On our platform, the proposed controller further outperforms b

Probing Collision Grounding in Vision-Language Models for Safe Human-Robot Collaboration

arXiv

arXiv:2605.31196v2 Announce Type: replace-cross Abstract: Safe human--robot collaboration requires more than visual description: a monitor must determine whether the robot body is safely separated, already colliding with the scene or a person, or about to collide. We call this capability collision grounding: binding visual observations to robot body geometry, camera viewpoint, scene layout, human proximity, and temporal motion in order to infer present and imminent contact. We introduce TouchSafeBench, a physics-grounded benchmark for evaluating collision grounding in vision-language models (VLMs). Built in Habitat~3.0, TouchSafeBench contains 2,940 simulated indoor co-presence episodes across social navigation and social rearrangement, with synchronized multi-view RGB-D observations, top-down trajectory maps, calibrated camera metadata, and simulator-derived contact labels. We study two deployment-facing tasks: classifying the current safety state and warning about imminent collision

Rethinking Densification in Gaussian SLAM: A Stationary Sampling Perspective

arXiv

arXiv:2601.00705v4 Announce Type: replace-cross Abstract: Gaussian Splatting enables high-fidelity differentiable SLAM by representing scenes as anisotropic Gaussian primitives. Most systems rely on residual-driven densification, which couples refinement with representation growth: accuracy saturates at a moderate primitive count, yet memory grows throughout the trajectory, degrading throughput. We introduce TopoGS-SLAM, a stationary-sampling formulation that decouples refinement from capacity through coverage-triggered Gaussian initialization and bounded-topology optimization, turning mapping into a bounded-dimensional problem with stable scaling. On standard indoor benchmarks, TopoGS-SLAM matches or surpasses densification-based pipelines in localization and reconstruction accuracy while substantially improving memory scalability and throughput, showing that iterative topology mutation is not required for accurate Gaussian SLAM in bounded-area static indoor scenes with sufficient mul

DepTR-MOT: Unveiling the Potential of Depth-Informed Trajectory Refinement for Multi-Object Tracking

arXiv

arXiv:2509.17323v2 Announce Type: replace-cross Abstract: Visual Multi-Object Tracking (MOT) is a crucial component of robotic perception, yet existing Tracking-By-Detection (TBD) methods often rely on 2D cues, such as bounding boxes and motion modeling, which struggle under occlusions and close-proximity interactions. Trackers relying on these 2D cues are particularly unreliable in robotic environments, where dense targets and frequent occlusions are common. While depth information has the potential to alleviate these issues, most existing MOT datasets lack depth annotations, leading to its underexploited role in the domain. To unveil the potential of depth-informed trajectory refinement, we introduce DepTR-MOT, a category-agnostic DETR-based detector enhanced with instance-level depth information. Specifically, we propose two key innovations: (i) foundation model-based instance-level soft depth label supervision, which refines depth prediction, and (ii) the distillation of dense dept

3D Generation for Embodied AI and Robotic Simulation: A Survey

arXiv

arXiv:2604.26509v4 Announce Type: replace Abstract: Embodied AI and robotic systems increasingly depend on scalable, diverse, and physically grounded 3D content for simulation-based training and real-world deployment. While 3D generative modeling has advanced rapidly, embodied applications impose requirements far beyond visual realism: generated objects must carry kinematic structure and material properties, scenes must support interaction and task execution, and the resulting content must bridge the gap between simulation and reality. This survey reviews 3D generation for embodied AI and organizes the literature around three roles that 3D generation plays in embodied systems. In Data Generator, 3D generation produces simulation-ready objects and assets, including articulated, physically grounded, and deformable content for downstream interaction; in Simulation Environments, it constructs interactive and task-oriented worlds, spanning structure-aware, controllable, and agentic scene ge

Factor Graph-Based Continuum Robot State Estimation with Magnus Expansion Priors

arXiv

arXiv:2604.15619v2 Announce Type: replace Abstract: Reconstructing the shape of continuum manipulators from sparse, noisy sensor data is a challenging task, owing to the infinite-dimensional nature of such systems. Existing approaches broadly trade off between parametric methods that yield compact state representations but lack probabilistic structure, and Cosserat rod inference on factor graphs, which provides principled uncertainty quantification at the cost of a state dimension that grows with the spatial discretization. This letter combines the strengths of both these approaches by estimating the coefficients of a compact Geometric Variable Strain (GVS) parameterization within a factor graph framework. A novel kinematic factor, derived from the Magnus expansion of the strain field, encodes the closed-form rod geometry as a prior constraint linking the GVS strain coefficients to the backbone pose variables. The resulting formulation yields a compact state vector, is directly amenabl

Emergent Neural Automaton Policies: Learning Symbolic Structure from Visuomotor Trajectories

arXiv

arXiv:2603.25903v3 Announce Type: replace Abstract: Scaling robot learning to long-horizon tasks remains a formidable challenge. While end-to-end policies often lack the structural priors needed for effective long-term reasoning, traditional neuro-symbolic methods rely heavily on hand-crafted symbolic priors. We introduce ENAP (Emergent Neural Automaton Policy), a neuro-symbolic imitation learning framework in which a bi-level policy adaptively emerges from visuomotor demonstrations. Specifically, we employ adaptive clustering and an extension of the L* algorithm to learn the task structure from demonstrations as a Mealy state machine, which serves as an interpretable high-level planner capturing latent task modes. This discrete structure then guides a low-level reactive residual network to learn precise continuous control via behavior cloning (BC). By explicitly modeling discrete transitions and continuous residuals, ENAP achieves sample efficiency and interpretability without task-sp

VORL-EXPLORE: A Hybrid Learning Planning Approach to Multi-Robot Exploration in Dynamic Environments

arXiv

arXiv:2603.07973v2 Announce Type: replace Abstract: Hierarchical multi-robot exploration decouples frontier allocation from local navigation, making systems brittle in dynamic environments. Without awareness of execution difficulty, allocators may send robots toward frontiers whose routes are congested or unsafe, causing bottlenecks, oscillatory replanning, and redundant coverage. We propose VORL-EXPLORE, a hybrid learning and planning framework that makes exploration execution-aware through execution fidelity, an estimate of local navigability and execution reliability. This fidelity score is used to penalize risky or crowded frontiers in a fidelity-coupled Voronoi allocation objective with inter-robot repulsion, and to arbitrate between global $A^*$ guidance and a reactive reinforcement learning policy during navigation. As a result, robots follow efficient global plans in reliable regions and rely more on safer local reactions in crowded or changing areas. The fidelity model is reca

CARE: Consistent Action-Response Execution for Human-Guided Robot Transport

arXiv

arXiv:2601.16686v2 Announce Type: replace Abstract: Human-guided collaborative transport becomes interaction-critical when the operator can continue along a route segment that is not executable by the robot--payload system. In this regime, operator motion is not an exogenous reference: it simultaneously communicates a persistent route tendency and adapts to the robot's realized progress. A common modular formulation predicts one operator future from observation history, scores multiple robot proposals against that shared forecast, and then modifies the selected command for local feasibility. This can compare candidates under responses they would not induce and can condition prediction on an action that is never executed. We formulate local control over executable-action-indexed joint human--robot transitions and instantiate it in Consistent Action--Response Execution (CARE). Each nominal proposal or bounded alternative is first mapped to an executable action; that same action condition

Deep Learning Warm Starts for Trajectory Optimization on the International Space Station

arXiv

arXiv:2505.05588v4 Announce Type: replace Abstract: Trajectory optimization is a cornerstone of modern robot autonomy, enabling systems to compute trajectories and controls in real-time while respecting safety and physical constraints. However, it has seen limited usage in spaceflight applications due to its heavy computational demands that exceed the capability of most flight computers. In this work, we provide results on the first in-space demonstration of using machine learning-based warm starts for accelerating trajectory optimization for the Astrobee free-flying robot onboard the International Space Station (ISS). We formulate a data-driven optimal control approach that trains a neural network to learn the structure of the trajectory generation problem being solved using sequential convex programming (SCP). Onboard, this trained neural network predicts solutions for the trajectory generation problem and relies on using the SCP solver to enforce safety constraints for the system. O

Haptic bilateral teleoperation system for free-hand dental procedures

arXiv

arXiv:2503.21288v4 Announce Type: replace Abstract: Free-hand dental procedures are typically repetitive, time-consuming and require high precision and manual dexterity. Robots can play a key role in improving procedural accuracy and safety, enhancing patient comfort, and reducing operator workload. However, robotic solutions for free-hand procedures remain limited or completely lacking. To address this gap, we develop a haptic bilateral teleoperation system (HBTS) for free-hand dental procedures (FH-HBTS). The system includes a mechanical end-effector, compatible with standard clinical tools, and equipped with an endoscopic camera for improved visibility of the intervention site. By ensuring motion and force correspondence between the operator's and the robot's actions, monitored through visual feedback, we enhance the operator's sensory awareness and motor accuracy. Furthermore, to ensure procedural safety, we limit interaction forces by scaling the motion references provided to the

RobustRLlib: A Unified Library and Benchmark for Robust Reinforcement Learning Algorithms

arXiv

arXiv:2610.32971v1 Announce Type: cross Abstract: Robust reinforcement learning (RL) is critical for reliable real-world deployment, where policies may fail under diverse shifts and disruptions. Existing robust RL algorithms offer a rich set of mechanisms and principles, yet two major barriers limit their broader potential: limited algorithm reusability and an unclear empirical capability boundary. We introduce RobustRLlib, an algorithm-centric library and benchmark that addresses both challenges. It integrates 17 representative robust online, offline, and safe RL algorithms under a unified interface for substantially improved reusability, together with an enhanced evaluation platform spanning diverse real-world shifts and advanced humanoid and vision-language-action tasks. Systematic evaluation over 273 perturbation configurations provides an up-to-date capability map of current robust RL algorithms, revealing where they remain effective and where substantial robustness gaps persist.

Regularised RL improves sim-to-real transfer

arXiv

arXiv:2610.32855v1 Announce Type: cross Abstract: Regularised reinforcement learning (RL) has provable robustness guarantees that should ease the transfer of policies from simulation to robots, known as sim-to-real. Yet, weakly regularised algorithms like Proximal Policy Optimisation (PPO) remain the de facto choice in sim-to-real pipelines, while the practical benefits of regularisation for transfer remain poorly characterised. In this work, we study the sim-to-real performance of commonly used RL algorithms, with the aim of characterising the effects of regularisation on robotic performance. To that end, we derive Soft MellowMax Actor-Critic (SMM-AC), a novel regularised RL algorithm based on the soft mellowmax value function, which carries strong robustness guarantees. On MuJoCo continuous control benchmarks, SMM-AC is competitive with baselines like Soft Actor-Critic (SAC). On real robots, SMM-AC achieves higher return, while exhibiting greater robustness to perturbations in observ
